Immigration agents arrest 11 in raid on party rental company

SAN DIEGO – Federal agents raided a party rental company Thursday and arrested 11 workers on immigration violations, authorities said.
Nine of those detained worked for Raphael's Party Rentals, a long-established business that did work on Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. Two others worked for another party rental company.

The company handles shows, golf tournaments and other events on the base, according to owner Philip Silverman. He said he did not know whether any of the people who were arrested had worked on the base.

All 11 were Mexican citizens working using phony immigration documents, said Lauren Mack, a spokeswoman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Silverman is not under suspicion and cooperated with investigators.

“It appears they were duped by false documents,” Mack said.

Silverman said he handed over a list of employees to immigration officials in October.

“We've done everything we needed to do, but it hurts me as a business owner because I lost good employees,” Silverman said. He said some of those arrested worked for him for years.

The raid is part of an effort by immigration authorities in San Diego to review employment records of military contractors. More than 800 unauthorized workers have been arrested since 2003.

The detainees were taken to a federal facility in downtown San Diego and processed for deportation, Mack said.
