Suspected illegal immigrants detained after tip

SAN DIEGO – A group of suspected illegal immigrants was detained wearing life vests early Tuesday morning after being spotted coming out of the water in the La Jolla Cove, police said.
A homeless man flagged police down about 1:55 a.m. and told an officer that he saw several people come out of the water near the Children's Pool and leave in a large van, said Detective Gary Hassen.



AdvertisementThe officer saw wet footprints on the sand leading up a sidewalk, Hassen said. Police then saw a gray van heading east on state Route 52 at southbound Interstate 5.
Police pulled the van over minutes later, just after 2 a.m., on I-5 at 10th Avenue downtown.

Eight people found inside, some of whom were still wearing life vests, were detained. One man then ran away and has not been found, Hassen said.

The man was wet, barefoot, and wearing a life vest and handcuffs, Hassen said.

Border Patrol officials took the other seven people into custody.

I applaud the "homeless man" who did a very patriotic thing by turning in the illegals. Hats off to him.

Been hearing more and more about illegals coming by boat in the last couple months. Just a big u-turn from TJ to San Diego.
