Teen driver killed in confrontation during traffic stop

SAN DIEGO – San Diego police shot and killed an armed 17-year-old driver during a traffic stop Saturday night in which he reportedly backed his SUV into a patrol car.

Police said officers saw the vehicle run a stop sign at Pyramid and Kenwood streets in the southeastern community of Emerald Hills about 10:45 p.m. They turned around and found the driver had pulled into a home's driveway about a block away on Bollenbacher Street.

As officers approached on both sides, one saw what appeared to be a gun on the passenger seat and yelled to his partner, who grabbed at the driver's wrists. Police said the teen pulled his hands free, shifted the SUV into reverse and crashed into the squad car. The vehicle then was driven forward and both officers opened fire.

Police said the SUV struck a garage door, backed up and drove forward again, turning toward an officer before finally crashing into a parked car.

The county Medical Examiner's Office identified the youth as Noe Rojas of Mexico. He died at the scene about 11:15 p.m.

Rojas apparently had been visiting a brother and cousin who live a few blocks from the shooting. At the house yesterday, the wife of one of Rojas' cousins said the teen has been living in San Diego's Normal Heights area for about a year, working construction.

The in-law, Zamaida Lopez, 19, said Rojas briefly stopped by his relatives' Pyramid Street home Saturday night. He may have been intoxicated, Lopez said, adding she didn't know whether he owned a weapon.

Lopez said her in-laws heard about the shooting from neighbors, but police at the scene would not let the teen's brother, Israel Rojas, see or go near him. Yesterday afternoon, she said the grieving family still knew little about how or why Rojas was killed.

Next, we need ICE to pay a visit to the grieving family to make sure they attend the funeral in messico................................ AND STAY THERE.

if there was ever any dought that at 17 this person didnt know what stop and pull over was then someone needs to help the rest of the children in the family before they try the same kind of follish move.

Believe it or not these undocumented ding bats have some kind of knowledge of the blue lights in the rear view, i would be intrested to know if this teen had a record or run in before this point in his stay in our country (mexico or here)

It doesn't come out and say 'illegal,' it just says he's from Mexico and has been living in the area about a yr. At 17 yrs old I wouldn't think he's here with some kind of work permit. Our newspaper doesn't like the word 'illegal.' Will delete the post if you'd rather.

Something similar happened in Miami on Sunday morning. Two Hispanic males were being stopped in a routine traffic stop and from what a witness said the driver made a U turn and drove towards the officer. He thought that he would be in danger so he shot the driver. The 20 year old driver died and the passenger took off in the car. He was apprehended quickly. I posted the article yesterday. It claimed the officer involved was also Hispanic. Today in the media the word Hispanic mysteriously disappeared.
The drivers actions indicate that they were illegals, unlicensed and/or driving a stolen car. No names were released and no greiving parent(s) have been shown yet so it makes me wonder. Also when the news channel spoke to people in the area one was African American and the other was a non English speaking Hispanic security guard.
I will make an attempt to find out more.

I just heard a snippet of this talked about on a talk radio show. Said the boy was an illegal and the gun was a toy. This is sad.

I think there is more to this than they have found out yet, who in their right mind is going to grap a gun, toy or not, and crash their car into a police vehicle? All this because he will get a ticket for running a stop sign or at the worst be deported?
I bet he was wanted for something else or he was high on meth or both!
