Sanctuary Law Contributed To Woman's Slaying, Organization Says

    Associated Press
    April 5, 2007

SEATTLE -- An organization based in Bellevue, Wash., says Seattle’s sanctuary law helped kill a University of Washington employee.

Authorities said Rebecca Griego was shot Monday in her office by her ex-boyfriend, Jonathan Rowan, who was in the United States illegally.

Rowan entered the country from Britain in 1996 on a visa that expired in 90 days. He worked odd jobs, moved frequently and used fake names.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported that Rowan had been arrested on drunken driving charges in June, but officers didn’t know he was an undocumented immigrant. City law forbids police from routinely asking people about their immigration status.

The “Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms” said three peace officers in Eastern Washington also have died at the hands of undocumented immigrants.

The committee said the Seattle City Council should repeal its sanctuary law.

So, should we do the same here that they would do to him in England for a charge of murder? Oh, and I do have friends from Britain who are here as resident aliens, they go every year to renew their visas, religously. I wonder what they would say about this. I'll ask then later on this weekend and see what they have to say.

Hopefully the family if filing lawsuit against the city and the federal government. City and federal officals are responsible by not enforcing immigration laws and protecting illegals.

If it's OK for foreigners to break the law by coming over here illegally, it should be OK for the police to break departmental rules by asking them about their immigration status.

But then some overzealous US Attorney would trump up a "civil rights" charge against the police and prosecute them, a la Johnny Sutton.

This shooting on the University campus this week has been very high profile in the news this week, maybe some pressure can be applied to the City of Seattle to change its policies.

This is a huge problem accross Washington state. Seattle has a formal "sanctuary" policy, most other local jurisdictions just seem to have an informal "don't ask, don't tell" policy on immigration status.
