Cramer announces bill to reduce flowof illegal immigrants
'Enforcement-first provisions' backed through SAVE Act
    Wednesday, November 07, 2007
    From staff reports
    Huntsville Times
U.S. Rep. Bud Cramer announced Tuesday that he and a bipartisan group of House members have introduced a bill designed to reduce illegal immigration in the United States.

The Secure America with Verification and Enforcement (SAVE) Act seeks to reduce illegal immigration through "enforcement-first provisions," according to a news release from Cramer's office.

The bill would add border patrol agents, improve federal and local law enforcement's capabilities against illegal immigrants and strengthen the existing employment verification system, the release states. The legislation does not provide amnesty for illegal immigrants already in the country.

"I have heard from countless people in North Alabama who are fed up with the number of illegal immigrants in our country," said Cramer, D-Huntsville. "This bill is an enforcement-only piece of legislation. The purpose is to stop the flow of illegal immigrants in the country, to give law enforcement additional tools to arrest illegal immigrants and deport them back to their native countries, and to prevent illegal immigrants from easily obtaining employment."

    8,000 agents

Specifically, the SAVE Act would add 8,000 border patrol agents and employ additional surveillance technology, including Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, to create a virtual fence along the northern and southern borders. The bill also adds 1,150 Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents as well as provide 8,000 additional beds for illegal immigrants detained by law enforcement officials.

The bill also requires information sharing between the Department of Homeland Security, the Social Security Administration and the Internal Revenue Service to strengthen the E-Verify program in order to assist employers as they verify the legal status of their employees.

The SAVE Act has 90 cosponsors in the House of Representatives.

Thank you 80 Republicans and Democrats for introducing this bill, being sponsors and doing the leg work and politicking that will be required to get it passed.

The provisions sound good and I trust those people who have worked hard and long reviewing it ...
