    Scottsdale district fires janitor firm

    Scottsdale district fires janitor firm

SCOTTSDALE - The Scottsdale Unified School District said Monday that it is terminating its contract with ABM Janitorial Services.

The termination will be effective in about a month and comes after district officials discovered that the company didn't conduct background checks on its employees until after the district asked to review them.

The company has been under fire since Aug. 24, when a Saguaro High School freshman told police that an ABM janitor sexually assaulted her on campus. The janitor, Roberto Lemus-Retana, is an undocumented immigrant, and ABM violated district policy by only running a state background check on him.

School district officials found that ABM did not conduct background checks until Sept. 6-8. On Friday, ABM provided the school district with Department of Public Safety checks for 92 of its 130 employees in Scottsdale schools.

The district also failed to receive documentation that ABM ever conducted Social Security verifications or background checks in states other than Arizona, which is required by the contract, district spokesman Keith Sterling said.

Scottsdale will add district employees to supervise the ABM employees until Bonded Cleaning Co. takes over, Sterling said.

ABM did not return phone calls. ABM has worked in 29 of Scottsdale's 34 schools for the past six years.

Lemus-Retana was indicted on charges of kidnapping, sexual conduct with a minor, public sexual indecency to a minor and sexual abuse, reports the Maricopa County Attorney's Office.

My letter to this writer in the RAG (aka: Republic)

    Ofelia, Honey,

You did it again. You failed to refer to this criminal as an ILLEGAL ALIEN. Here is a definition for you.

The word UNDOCUMENTED is a poor replacement for the word ILLEGAL, especially since it sounds hopeful a criminal can suddenly "become" documented or legalized. Furthermore, it fails to deliver the fact that a law is being broken here.

Secondly, the word Immigrant is a poor replacement for the word ALIEN. You don't have to be worried about your GANNETT / LAVOZ style political correctness. I have included the definition for this word too. I included the definition for "IMMIGRANT", which really doesn't fit, since it is defined as a person who usually migrates to another country permanently. The word ALIEN shouldn't be shunned. Phil Collins had a song called ILLEGAL ALIEN, and it was played with no protests on stations all across this great country in 1983.

In summary, your PC definition transmits the thought that this person is permanently migrating to our country, and just hasn't been documented "yet". Is the Arizona Republic that desperate for new Latino subscribers? Every day, there is a new racist article about "HISPANICS" or "LATINOS" or "MEXICO". While not seeing any articles defining WHITES or ANGLOS, clubs, laws, sales trends, or organizations for them, I am getting tired of your paper's racial bias! Who can we complain to?

All we ask, as subscribers to your newspaper, is that you refer to Illegal Aliens as ILLEGAL ALIENS, instead of concocting a new style of potentially politically correct verbiage.

    bradb:

    Welcome aboard!

    A most excellent post indeed.

You think like we do... no matter the amount of prodding, the careful explanation of terms and definitions, etc.... some people just can't or won't say: 'Illegal Alien'!

Yet, in all US laws which are written on the subject matter, the term 'Undocumented Immigrant' does not exist - only 'Illegal Alien'.
    ... The propaganda continues...
