Announces Across-the-Board Increases in Drugs, Weapons and Cash Seizures

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Janet Napolitano today highlighted the United States’ significant progress in securing the U.S.-Mexico border one year after the Obama administration announced the Southwest Border Initiative—a series of unprecedented steps to crack down on Mexican drug cartels by deploying additional personnel and technology, increasing information sharing, working closely with the Mexican government, and improving federal coordination with state, local and tribal law enforcement authorities.

“Last March, this administration took decisive action to combat transnational crime and drug-related violence along the Southwest border to help ensure the security of both the United States and Mexico,â€

This may be a good thing, as the morale of the CBP was really down after the Ramos and Compean fiasco. These guys put their lives on the line every day and their accomplishments need to be publicized.

Secretary Napolitano has visited Mexico five times in the past year, meeting with Mexican President Felipe Calderón on multiple occasions—most recently this week as part of U.S. delegation for the Mérida U.S.-Mexico High Level Consultative Group—to discuss ways both nations can work together to secure the border.

I would like to suggest another meeting in light of this week's murder of an American rancher.

Spot on James. How can Napolitano claim the border is secure when only 862 miles of the 1,957 mile long border is under operational control. How can she claim the border is secure when border patrol tells us for every illegal alien they catch, at least 4 or 5 evade apprehension? The border patrol caught 6000 from special interest countries in 2008 alone. Obama is cutting the number of border patrol personnel and Napolitano gutted other physical border security measures and interior enforcement while border patrol tells us the border is out of control with illegal aliens pouring into this country and drug cartel violence right behind them. You have to do better than this Napolitano........
