Section of Nogales border fence painted white

Nogales, Ariz. - A 100-foot section of the border fence in Nogales is now painted white, a contrast to the typical rusty brown border fence.

The painted section of fence stands in a hilly neighborhood east of downtown Nogales.

The Border Patrol's Tucson Sector says the white paint is a strategic change. It says dark figures trying to climb it now stand out against it.

They emailed the following statement:

"Painting the wall white in certain high-risk areas along the U.S./Mexico border in Nogales, Ariz., increases situational awareness by improving the ability of camera operators to detect movement, particularly at night against a dark background.These small adjustments improve our ability to support the overall border security mission."

Something Homeland Security Secretary Kristjen Nielsen is in favor of. She believed the border is in crisis, "it's being exploited by criminals and smugglers and thousands of people who have no respect for our laws," Secretary Nielsen said.

In a tour of the Nogales border earlier this week, she recognized the need to improve infrastructure and pledged her support to border security. "I will continue to do all I can to get all your tools and resources you need to do the jobs American people ask you to do," she said.

She says the Trump administration is taking steps to put an end to what she called lawlessness on the border.

It is still unknown if Border Patrol plans on painting other sections of the Nogales fence as well.

That's very pretty, I like it a lot. Paint them all white. Stops the rust. Looks nice, friendly and homey for our residents as well. It is painted on both sides, right? Or do just the Mexicans get the pretty fence?

Probably a waste of money. These fences are see through to start with and BP shouldn't have a problem identifying climbers regardless of how "pretty" the fence is. This isn't suppose to be Trump's "big beautiful wall" is it? That beautiful white paint will get dirty, scratched off and damaged quickly.

A more comfortable aura for the illegal aliens to hang out near. And by keeping the fence from rusting, less change of infection if they scrape themselves climbing the wall. And let's not forget, it helps the bottom line for the paint company! And the white paint, being reflective, helps reduce global warming!

Put signs out instructing illegal aliens to wear dark clothes when climbing the wall!

You're absolutely right, it's not Trump's wall or fence, that is an old fence that they painted, and while it does look a lot better, it won't keep climbers out. Maybe on their cameras they sit and look at inside their offices, they can't see them climbing over as well on that darker fence. I can see that being a problem. But if you're out there on the ground, you can see them scaling regardless of the color of the fence. I think it was for the cameras to create more contrast from a distance and maybe that will make it easier for BP. It looks nice though, and I like that. I think it's important that our borders fences and walls look nice, look pretty, as well as get the job done.
