Stefania Sani: Secure Communities program is a cause for concern

Dear Editor: Greatly disappointing and worrisome was the recent news that, starting now, Wisconsin is participating in the Secure Communities program.
This Department of Homeland Security program is being aptly explained in many media. The program raises many concerns:
Community policing: The use of local police forces to be tasked with regulation of immigration status takes time and energy away from investigating and preventing real criminality.
Detentions: There are concerns about limitation of individual rights.
Profiling: There is concern about potential abuse of the system in the way it triages detainees.
Transparency/recourse: There is concern about the lack of statutory mechanisms needed for oversight and for protection of legal rights.
Many communities across the country (San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York) have questioned the program and its consequences and are trying to opt out. Here in Wisconsin, we should also pay attention. The decision to join the program was made stealthily and with no discussion. We need to understand the full impact of making our communities “Secure Communitiesâ€NO AMNESTY

Keep barking at the moon Stef.
You cannot dedicate yourself to America unless you become in every
respect and with every purpose of your will thoroughly Americans. You
cannot become thoroughly Americans if you think of yourselves in groups. President Woodrow Wilson

If you're in Wisconsin, please write letters in support of Secure Communities to all newspaper editors in Wisconsin showing STRONG SUPPORT FOR THE INITIATIVE WHICH KEEPS ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS OFF THE STREETS IN MANY COMMUNITITES THROUGHOUT THE U.S.!!!!!
