Senator Bob Corker (R - TN) Tennessee Senator Bob Corker said today Congress has failed to pass significant legislation on illegal immigration because the proposals have been too grandiose. Both Corker and Senator Lamar Alexander said they will vote against limiting debate on a proposed immigration overhaul supported by President Bush. The Senate bill would tighten borders and workplace enforcement, create a new guest worker program and provide pathways to legal status. Corker said the country needs a more modest immigration reform that can put systems in place. After that, he said, the federal government could begin to enforce the laws currently on the books. Corker placed emphasis on border security, employer identification of workers and improving the ability to track visa violations.
