Senate bill S 2717 will allow local enforcement of illegal immigration laws
April 22, 2008

This could be a huge win in the battle against illegal immigration. The new bill, S 2717 would allow local law enforcement to enforce the Federal immigration laws that are on the books. Here is the synopsis on this new law:

State and local law enforcement officers are on the front lines of combating crimes committed by illegal aliens, but they are often hampered in their efforts. S 2717 - the Effective Immigration Enforcement Partnerships Act of 2008 - by Senator Saxby Chambliss (R-GA), clarifies the authority of state and local law enforcement agencies to investigate, identify, and apprehend illegal immigrants to enforce federal immigration laws.

The legislation also requires the Department of Homeland Security to take an illegal alien into custody within 72 hours of apprehension or arrest by local officers. In addition, the bill requires the Department to offer training for state and local law enforcement officers and to compensate local entities for the expenses of immigration enforcement.

While border enforcement is imperative, we also need the interior enforcement that can only be provided by local agencies.
