Sessions wanted to stay until the end of the week

Sessions wanted to stay until the end of the week
From CNN’s Laura Jarrett and Kaitlan Collins
Former Attorney General Jeff Sessions wanted to try to stay until the end of the week, but White House Chief of Staff John Kelly told him no. Kelly was very firm it had to be today, according to administration officials.
A White House spokesman declined to comment on the subject.
The resignation letter submitted by Sessions today is not the old resignation letter that the former attorney general previously offered and President Trump rejected, a source familiar with the matter tells CNN.
There is no secret meaning to the fact that the letter is undated, the source says, adding, things were simply moving fast.

Sessions was called by John Kelly, not the President, this morning
From CNN's Laura Jarrett
Attorney General Jeff Sessions received no phone call from President Trump, according to an administration official.
The call to Sessions came from Chief of Staff John Kelly this morning. There is no word yet on when Matthew Whitaker will be sworn in and whether special counsel Robert Mueller was told ahead of time.
Sessions was still in the building and was expected to leave by the end of the day, the official said.

If someone is doing a bad job, and it is in the best interest of the country to fire them, then they need to be fired immediately, not a few hours after an election.
The timing tells me he was not fired in the best interest of the country, but he was used/abused then fired to satisfy Trump's personal agenda.
Disgusting that he was used again to try and win this election, and they think we have short memories and will forget by 2020, but not all of us will.
Very disturbing that everything has become all about winning an election, and no one seems to care what is accomplished after the win. You've got to Stand for Something or You'll Fall for Anything

I read Jeff Sessions forced resignation letter... he is such a classy gentleman. And Trump sending someone else to demand his resignation... cowardly.

It's my understanding the firing of Jeff Sessions is all about the Russian collusion probe. Shutting down the investigation is Trump's highest priority. Dealing with illegal immigration, asylum, and border security doesn't quite measure up when compared to the threat the investigation has on Trump or maybe one of his family members, which includes his son-in-law, Jared Kushner.
Trump may not have colluded with the Russians, but he's certainly afraid of something being revealed that he would rather stay hidden. Only time will tell what that may be. One rumor being floated around in the media lately is that Trump is afraid the probe may lead to an investigation of his personal finances.
Jeff Sessions has been a loyal soldier on all of Trump's claimed positions of importance because he too shares those positions. However, the glaring exception is the Russian collusion probe. Trump has sacrificed Jeff Sessions in the hopes that he can end or gain more control over the Russian collusion investigation.
