    Sixth murder suspect in custody

    Sixth murder suspect in custody
    From staff reports

Hattiesburg police officers have a sixth suspect in custody they believe was involved in the murder of Fermin Diaz, the city’s first homicide of the year.

According to Capt. Michael Shappley, Martin Catemaxca, 36, was arrested Saturday by border patrol officers in Brownsville, Texas, and returned into the custody of the Hattiesburg Police Department today.

Shappley said Catemaxca is the sixth, and final suspect, they believe stabbed Diaz, 25, during a physical altercation at the James Street Apartments around 2 a.m. Aug. 26.

Police already have arrested five other suspects in connection to Diaz’s murder.

Shappley said Catemaxca will be charged with murder and transported to the Forrest County jail.

    Man killed after argument
    By JILLIAN KRAMER

A verbal disagreement Sunday morning turned deadly for 25-year-old Fermin Diaz, who was stabbed by several men and pronounced dead at Forrest General Hospital.

Hattiesburg Police were dispatched at 2 a.m. to James Street Apartments where they arrested five men in connection with the stabbing, Hattiesburg Police Spokeswoman LaShana Sorrell said.

Arrested were Santos Cagan, 28, Fabio Xulo, 25, Santus Xolo, 19, Roman Xolo, 33, and Luis Xolo, 22, all of Hattiesburg. All were charged with assessory to murder and are being held at the Forrest County Jail.

Police are investigating "the situation that led to the altercation" that led to Diaz's death, Sorrell said.

Neither Sorrell nor Forrest County Coroner Butch Benedict would confirm how many times or where Diaz was stabbed.

No other injuries were "visible to the eye" other than stab wounds, Benedict said, indicating Diaz died from stab wounds.

Benedict expects to receive autopsy results Tuesday and will confirm Diaz's cause of death then, he said.

Diaz was not a resident of the James Street Apartments, Sorrell said, and four of those arrested lived at the apartments.
