SOB: 2,000 calls claim Alabama immigration law hardship

2,000 calls claim Alabama immigration law hardship

By Marie Leech -- The Birmingham News

The nation's harshest immigration law, upheld by a federal judge last week, is creating nothing short of a "humanitarian crisis" that mirrors the fear and racism felt during the Jim Crow era, opponents of the law said Thursday.

During an afternoon news conference about Alabama's immigration law, lawyers, educators and children's advocates said the effects of the law mirror the fear and racism felt during the Jim Crow era and have led to thousands of children being kept home from school, pregnant women being afraid to give birth in a hospital and families having their water supply cut off.

Mary Bauer, legal director of the Southern Poverty Law Center, said more than 2,000 phone calls have flooded the center's hotline, established less than a week ago.

"We've heard from husbands who can't take their wives to the hospital to give birth, and from people who are so sick but are afraid to go to the hospital," she said. "Thousands of children are out of school and those who are in school are subject to horrible conditions."

In one case, she said, Hispanic children were called to the cafeteria and questioned about the legal status of their parents.

"I'm wondering when that day will come where they will be asked to wear the yellow star," Bauer said.

She said she's also heard that several cities have cut off water service to customers whose immigration status is in question. "In other words, some families may have to go without clean water and the convenience of indoor plumbing while they wait on the courts to determine what we've known all along -- this law is unconstitutional and should have never been enforced," she said.

Father Jack Kane, a priest at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Opelika, said national immigration reform is urgent.

"What's going to happen as people leave Alabama is that they'll end up like nomads going from state to state because there is no national law," he said.

Pamela Long, associate professor of international studies at Auburn University Montgomery, said she is counseling a Hispanic family now that is considering leaving Alabama.

The family, she said, owns a small business with six employees and has three children.

"That would be disrupting the lives of three minor children, who are going to be ripped from their schools and the spiritual community," she said. "None of these children know anything about Mexico, so if they get deported to Mexico, it's going to be reverse culture shock."

This sounds like a lot of bull! Look at the source, the Southern Poverty Law Center. It is federal law that the kids have to be taught in school. Your water doesn't inadvertently get shut off unless you haven't paid your bill in over two months and anyone having a baby should have had prenatal care and a Doctor set up to deliver. They also should have arranged a means to pay for the birth.

If someone thinks they will just walk into a hospital and have a baby and not have ever done anything in advance, they think they're going to have a baby for free?

I don't believe this in the least. Those babies are their ticket to free benefits from American taxpayers. They want those birth certificates to show at the welfare office.

Sorry, but there IS a national law. It says these people don't belong here and that they're breaking the law.

So there is no culture shock when they sneak their kiddies INTO the U.S.?

You cannot dedicate yourself to America unless you become in every
respect and with every purpose of your will thoroughly Americans. You
cannot become thoroughly Americans if you think of yourselves in groups. President Woodrow Wilson

The hell they dont know anything about Mexico. They speak the language, they proudly fly that countries rag, they are constanly whining about how they love that stupid country. Go the hell back and stop it with the Jewish references for Gods sake. They probly dont even know what a bagel looks like.

An illegal was arrested here in Mid-Tenn for raping a 9 year old girl. This same man was arrested not long ago in San Antonio and was released. They keep talking about the law-abiding illegals should be left alone. However, if they practiced prevention, this tradegy would not have happened. I'm sick of these sob stories. Apparently the endless drunk driving murders, rapes and other horrible crimes are just collateral damage to the open border crowd. If one of these horrible crimes could have been prevented, they should have deported every illegal they came in contact with.

They could have saved thousands of lives, not to mention the ones that were destroyed, just by enforcing the law. I would like to see someone from the SPLC answer the question...."Do they consider all the maiming and deaths necessary just so others can have a "better life?"

Would you invite 10 people into your home if you knew 3 could be criminals??

These pastors should be sent the website listing all those that have died because he and others like him support the lawlessness. They all have blood on their hands.

Didn't they just say a federal court upheld the law as constitutional...oh..what she really mean't was we will continue to shop for a court to side with us until we run out of courts. In the meantime please continue to donate to our cause so I can paid this week.

This will ultimately have to be heard and ruled on by the US Supreme court as too many district courts render to many different opinions. Look at Arizona where they pretty much put a stay on most of the laws that were upheld in Alabama federal district court.
