Suspect in murder of 11 year old surrenders

The 20-year-old suspect in the weekend shooting death of an 11-year-old boy in Hobbs New Mexico surrendered to police Wednesday.

Carlos Maldonado is charged with killing Lawrence Juarez on Saturday following an early morning fracas.

Investigators say that Maldonado had gotten into a fight at a party. When he left the party, he shot up the car in which Juarez and his father were sitting. Juarez was shot in the head.

Maldonado was shot in the chest in the same incident and 17-year-old Andrea Hernandez was shot in the face. Both were airlifted to a Lubbock hospital.

Maldonado faces an open count of murder, along with charges of shooting at or from a motor vehicle and tampering with evidence. He’s being held at the Lea County Detention Facility on $1 million bond.
