Suspected Gulf Cartel members arrested in Matamoros

Seventeen suspected Gulf Cartel members were presented before the public Tuesday after they were taken into custody over the weekend, according to a press release from the Mexican navy.

The suspects were presented Tuesday morning at a military base in Matamoros, where they were lined up next to a weapons cache that the troops seized.

Six of the men were wearing municipal police uniforms and claimed to be police officers from Rio Bravo, Matamoros and Valle Hermoso, but it couldn’t be confirmed independently with the respective cities if the men were indeed police officers.

According to the press release, the men were arrested in various operations over the weekend, where the military also seized 42 vehicles including several tractor-trailers, limited-edition sports cars and SUVs.

Military intelligence led the troops to various stash houses where they were able to disrupt the group’s operation, the release stated.

Also seized were 49 rifles, two handguns, eight bundles of cocaine, 16 bundles of marijuana, 101,533 ammunition rounds, 1,200 ammunition magazines, six hand grenades, 125 military type uniforms, 10 Kevlar helmets, five Kevlar vests, 15 cartridge belts, 31 cellular phones, 20 communication radios and two radio repeaters.
