Suspected people - smuggler on loose

    Suspected people-smuggler on loose
    Tucson, Arizona | Published: 06.02.2008
    The Fugitive: Jose Gerardo Canez-Cienfuegos
When and Where: March 15, 2005, in Nogales, Ariz.
    Investigators: U.S. Marshal's Service
Summary: Border Patrol agents working in Nogales responded to a report of a suspected group of illegal immigrants walking through the desert, according to Tom Twohey, spokesman for the U.S. Marshal's Service.
In the area of Calle Nogales and Calle Mayer, the agents saw a gray Jeep Cherokee pick up a group of immigrants, Twohey said.
The agents stopped the vehicle, which was being driven by Canez-Cienfuegos, 22, Twohey said. Inside they found six people who were identified as being in the country illegally.
The Latest Information: Canez-Cienfuegos was taken in to custody on a smuggling charge but was released on his own recognizance, Twohey said. He was scheduled to appear in court to be arraigned on April 28 but did not show up.
Canez-Cienfuegos' last known address was listed in Rio Rico. He may be residing in the Nogales area, Twohey said.
All leads have been exhausted and there have not been any sightings of Canez-Cienfuegos, Twohey said.
He is described as being 6 feet, 5 inches tall, weighing 235 pounds and having brown eyes and black hair.
"He promised to appear for a court proceeding and he failed to do so," Twohey said.
"That makes him a fugitive from justice. The Marshal's Service will pursue all fugitives to the best of our ability."

The trailer contained marijuana with an estimated street value of $ 1,106,400.

An agent and a canine partner from the Nogales Border Patrol Station found more than 1,300 pounds of marijuana in a truck at the Interstate 19 checkpoint on Wednesday.

At 9 p.m., a Border Patrol K-9 alerted to the presence of drugs in a semi-truck trailer. The truck was referred to a secondary position for further inspection and again the canine alerted to the presence of drugs.

A search revealed numerous bundles of marijuana stacked between pallets of squash. A 41-year-old male, legal, permanent resident from Mexico was taken into custody.

The trailer contained 63 bundles of marijuana weighing approximately 1,383 pounds with an estimated street value of $ 1,106,400. The vehicle and marijuana were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Since Oct. 1, 2007, Tucson Sector agents have seized more than 520,000 pounds of marijuana.
