Tacoma May Change School District Policy to Honor Obama

Tacoma school may be named for Obama

    By The Associated Press

TACOMA — A new middle school under construction in Tacoma could be named for president-elect Barack Obama.

But district policy on school names requires people to be dead at least two years or to have already served a presidential term.

Superintendent Art Jarvis asked the school board to alter the policy at the Dec. 11 meeting and put Obama's name in the running.

The Tacoma News Tribune reports that school board member Kurt Miller suggested Obama as the name to recognize the nation's first black president.

The $50 million building with room for 850 students is set to open in September. It would not be the first school named after Obama. A district in Hempstead, N.Y., has already made the decision.
