Hundreds call for smaller government at corner of La Paz and Marguerite.

– Taxes, health care reform and illegal immigration were among the major issues drawing about 250 people to the corner of La Paz Road and Marguerite Parkway this afternoon for a Tea Party protest.

Protesters waved American flags and carried signs – "Don't tread on me," "Repeal the bill," "No Amnesty," among others – signaling their conservative stance on major issues and their wider call for lower taxes and smaller government.

Matt Carrigan, president of the Saddleback Republican Assembly, spoke to the crowd of about 250 during the Tea Party protest in Mission Viejo today.
Some attendants of the Tea ("Taxed Enough Already") Party protest, sponsored by the Saddleback Republican Assembly, said they came because they believe the country is headed in a socialist direction.

"Our grandkids are going to be taxed to oblivion," said Nancy Sandoval, a member of SRA who attended the demonstration. "We don't like the socialist direction are country's going in."

Matt Corrigan, president of the SRA, said today's event and the Tea Party generally stand against excessive taxation.

"There's continuing government intervention in all areas of life where the government really shouldn't be involved," Corrigan said.

Mission Viejo resident John Kawczynski carried a "Repeal the bill" sign during the protest, saying he was unhappy with the passage of health care insurance reform.

"It's supposed to be a government for the people," Kawczynski said. "They ignore that."

Chris Guadagnino of Lake Forest, who carried a "No amnesty" sign said, "People should come here legally, not illegally."

Guadagnino's daughter Gina said she came to the protest to reclaim her country.

"It's going down the shame spiral," Gina Guadagnino said. l
