08-29-2007, 04:19 PM #12I would figure that UPS and FedEx will use there Freight Lines from Mexico to make runs in the US over time... If this happens and it gets more "integrated" into America more companies will take advantage of throwing Americans out of work!!! Hell they did it to the manufacturing and the IT fields, so now why not the truck and shipping industry!

If the teamsters block the freeways going down into Mexico I'm going down there to support them. I'll block the freeways with them.
This issue isn't ONLY about the fact Mexican truckers will be taking jobs AWAY from US truckers and reducing the strength of trucking unions but also about safety and environmental issues. How safe does ANYONE think a Mexican truck driven by a Mexican driver unfamiliar w/US traffic laws/regulations is going to be? A 20 ton truck crash can take down a 5 lane freeway all by itself. A gasoline truck could incinerate hundreds of people. Trucks haul hazardous chemicals as well. Mexican trucks aren't going to comply w/DOT safety specs or environmental specs either. This is INSANE!

How about the quality of drivers once the Mexicans drag the wages down to say below 10 bucks an hour? I can see people who live in their trucks because they can't afford to live anywhere else. Imagine our roads filled with folks like that regardless as to race.

They are not passing health screens to work in the US either.
This is bull crap!
Also, they are pulling this stunt, while Congress is on break.

But Sam, the govt of Mexico said 'all their vehicles will comply with US law' - so you need not worry. We have the Mexican government's word on it.Mexican trucks aren't going to comply w/DOT safety specs or environmental specs either. This is INSANE
[yes, large doses of extremely dry sarcasm here]
But seriously folks, not only the above, but..
a). They don't have a computerized database which is readily accessible in or outside of Mexico to log and manage commercial driver certification/med. records/vehicle maintenance, etc.
b). The standards of getting a commercial license in Mexico are different than here.
c). As Dixie alluded to, they also have no program to regularly drug-test drivers - so think about that the next time you drive up next to an 80,000lb 18-wheeler loaded to the gills rolling down the highway at 65mph.
d). The Mexican drivers also operate in teams of 3-4 people. They basically will do shifts of 8 hours or so to keep the vehicle moving continuously on the job. Of course, US drivers have much less flexibility in driving hours and are mandated to have their rest break every so often. (from a relative of my neighbor who is a commercial big-rig driver; eg. I'm not the expert on this).
Is there anyway we can help the Teamsters stop this ridiculousness?
Are there folks near major interstates that can grab some photos of these rigs as they pass the border check stations? (just an idea - wish I was closer, well....sometimes...). Seems like having as much poop (documentation) on the condition of the rigs and how they are driven would be a great thing to pass along to those fighting this battle (Teamsters, friendly congresspeople, etc). ...Just a thought...Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

We should be on the phones to prevent this. This is a health and safety issue not to mention another opportunity to sell out the American workers.
Congress might be on break, but cant they hold an emergency session?I stay current on Americans for Legal Immigration PAC's fight to Secure Our Border and Send Illegals Home via E-mail Alerts (CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP)

08-30-2007, 12:39 PM #18I think you are right "jp" all of America should be shutting down the phone in DC again and yes they could hold a special session if they gave a damn or if the people would force them to!! Are we the only activist outraged about this?

This is something that should be extremely important to truckers. Is there some rule that requires Mexicans to touch back to Mexico once a day, once a week, or even once a month? I bet not. As such this will drive wages down and eventually there won't be any english speaking truck drivers around.
