EDINBURG — Border Patrol agents have once again arrested the teenager that led authorities on a high speed chase last year which resulted in the shooting of two Guatemalan immigrants by a DPS sharpshooter.
The teenager was arrested Thursday at 2:30 a.m. near Sullivan City after leading authorities on a high speed chase that began in Alto Bonito, said U.S. Border Patrol spokesman Daniel Tirado.
“We detained this individual, confirmed that it was the same person that had an outstanding warrant and turned him over to Hidalgo County authorities,” Tirado said.
The teenager had been in an out of juvenile detention centers since the fatal chase on October 25, when a DPS sharpshooter in a helicopter fired at the red pickup truck the teenager was driving thinking it was loaded with drugs when in fact it was full of individuals suspected of being in the country illegally.

. . . At the time, DPS policy allowed its troopers to shoot out the tires of fleeing, drug-loaded vehicles during pursuits. That policy has since been discontinued.
The teenager — allegedly on a human smuggling run — had nine people hiding under a tarp in the pickup truck’s bed near La Joya when game wardens unsuccessfully tried to stop the vehicle. A chase ensued, ending only when the truck’s tires were shot out.
The teen driver is a Mexican national who has been arrested various times by authorities on human smuggling charges and has been deported after each arrest.
Most recently, the teen was arrested in June by Border Patrol agents and deported, but since then, 449th state District Judge Jesse Contreras issued a warrant for his arrest. As of Thursday evening, the teenager had been taken to a juvenile detention center and was awaiting a hearing before Contreras.

Teen Held in Smuggling Case
Posted: Aug 9, 2013 3:07 PM Updated: Aug 9, 2013 4:14 PM
EDINBURG - A 15-year-old implicated in deadly human smuggling operation will be in detention for at least two weeks before his next hearing.
The teen was arrested and released twice after the smuggling attempt. The teen was behind the wheel of a Ford F150 fleeing from authorities, officials said. Texas Department of Public Safety troopers fired on the truck from a helicopter.
TxDPS officials said the troopers believed the truck was loaded with drugs before they opened fire. Three immigrants from Guatemala were shot. They were hiding under a tarp in the bed of the truck.
The shooting happened in October, 2012, near La Joya, while troopers were assisting game wardens in the pursuit. The chase ended at FM 2221 and Mile 7 Road.
Troopers arrested the teen, but he was released before being sent to juvenile detention. Police arrested him again on auto theft charges. He was released again and went back to Mexico.
A judge issued an arrest warrant for the teen in July after authorities learned he had reentered the country illegally. Officials believe he was smuggling immigrants again.
