TEMECULA: Band trip cancellation leads to controversy

Temecula Mayor Jeff Comerchero has pledged $2,000 in city funds to help finance a local high school band's now much debated trip to Arizona.

Comerchero wrote in an e-mail Wednesday night that he will draw from a discretionary fund all City Council members have and urged his colleagues on the council to do the same.

The decision last week by Great Oak High School's band to cancel its December trip to Arizona caused a firestorm of debate and criticism after an Arizona tourism official said the band's move was in response to the state's new and controversial immigration law.

School district officials have said the cancellation was due to a lack of finances and not for political reasons.

The band has participated in the same Fiesta Bowl Band Competition before, finishing in second place in 2007.
