Yuma Sector Border Patrol agents arrested a convicted rapist who was attempting to illegally enter the United States near San Luis, Ariz., Monday.

After apprehending Juan Lopez-Guzman, agents patrolling the border area conducted a records check which revealed the Mexican citizen had been convicted in 2006 for rape and inflicting corporal injury on a spouse/cohabitant in California. He was subsequently sentenced to 112 months in prison.

Agents also learned that Lopez was previously ordered removed from the U.S. in 2001 and, after serving his sentence for the 2006 conviction, was deported via San Ysidro, California, in 2013.

Lopez remains in custody pending further legal actions.
