Texas 'Sanctuary Cities' Under Fire After San Francisco Killing
Texas 'Sanctuary Cities' Under Fire After San Francisco Killing
Posted Friday, July 10th 2015 @ 5am
The murder of a California woman has put the so-called Sanctuary City movement, which is on display in three of Texas's biggest cities, in the spotlight.
Katheryn Steinle, 32, was allegedly shot to death In San Fransisco by Francisco Sanchez, an illegal immigrant from Mexico, who had previously been deported five times and has been convicted of seven felonies in several states. Four of those felonies were related to drug charges.
Sanchez's last arrest in San Francisco County was for selling marijuana. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement had issued a detainer request so, when he was released, he could be placed in deportation proceedings. But San Francisco has proclaimed itself a “sanctuary city” for illegal aliens, and like Houston, Dallas and Austin, refuses to honor detainer requests.
"We need to get serious about the security of the American people and it's about time we did that," JoAnn Fleming, Chair of the Texas Legislature’s TEA Party Caucus Advisory Committee, tells Newsradio 1200 WOAI.
She says there have been similar murder in Texas that could have been prevented if illegal immigrants had been deported instead of being released from jail and allowed to return to the public.
But immigrant rights activist Jaime Martinez says to lump all migrants together is a mistake, and the deportation of non-violent offenders would hurt the workforce
"Lets talk about the hard working immigrants who have kids in school and who are exploited," he says.
Despite an overwhelming Republican majority in the Texas Legislature, a bills dealing with “sanctuary cities” failed to get support.
San Antonio is not a sanctuary city.

Whether it is Texas, California, or any other State of USA governing from hindsight is not commendable governing. Often it must be demanded,, but in cases like this Steinle case, it should never be commended as this was foreseeable. Even JoAnn Fleming of the
TEA party admits that they were aware of it happening, to her discredit, as well as the entire legislature and the Governor, they did not address it. Great representation of protecting the citizens, whoopee! Democrats and republicans have to go with aliens, those aliens are the people that those parties represent!
Ms. Fleming stopped short of making a proposal or requesting the Governor call a special session to address this. Thus, it is more feel good talk without action. Again, typical of America's governing parties.Last edited by kevinssdad; 07-10-2015 at 12:21 PM. Reason: correctioed sentence
