TFU urges Congress to vote no on CAFTA

Texas Farmers Union President Wes Sims is in Washington, D.C. to urge members of the House of Representatives to vote against the Central Am-erican Free Trade Agree-ment (CAFTA).

Sims will seek to tip the scales in favor of Texas farmers and ranchers by promoting a responsible trade policy in meetings with U.S. Representatives.

"We need fair trade, which will increase our exports and reduce our huge trade deficits, not free trade, which will in-crease the imports, grow the deficits and increase our national debt," stated Sims.

The U.S. Senate recently approved CAFTA by a 54-45 vote, the slimmest margin of victory for a trade agreement in recent history.

The Senate's narrow approval of CAFTA reflects the lack of support this policy has in the courtryside.

The amendment will likely come to a finial vote on the House floor by the end of the month and passage may be dependent on just a few votes.

Texas Farmers Union maintains that CAFTA is a continuation of failed trade policies of the past. Its benefits to producers have been dramatically oversold. CAFTA not only encourages a race to the bottom for producer prices, it ignores major issues that distort fair trade such as labor, environmental regulations and currency.
