Thompson: Too much fire in the belly not good for a president

Associated Press - December 29, 2007 10:33 PM ET

WASHINGTON, Iowa (AP) - Fred Thompson says his quest for the White House isn't all consuming.

At a campaign rally in Iowa, he told a group of potential voters he's consumed by "very, very few things and politics is not 1 of them." The Republican believes some candidates have become to absorbed in the campaigning process and have lost sight of the goal to serve country.

And, Thompson says having too much "fire in the belly," can be a bad thing in today's world. He also says he won't be "devastated" if he doesn't get to the Oval Office. In fact he says, he's "not particularly interested in running for president." He says others prodded him into taking a shot and he thought it may be a good idea.

For those who question his commitment, he points to his stalling personal finances and says he has sacrificed lucrative television and radio contracts to hit the campaign trail.
