Thousands of Illegal Immigrants Leave Nevada

LAS VEGAS -- For the first time in 20 years, illegal immigrants are crossing back over the border, leaving the United States in large numbers. And nowhere else is that more evident than in Nevada, where we are seeing the largest decrease.
A new study from the Pew Hispanic Center found more than 11 million illegal immigrants left the United States last year. Trailing only California with the highest illegal immigrant population, 50,000 illegal immigrants left Nevada.
Las Vegas Latin Chamber President Otto Merida says the loss could equal millions lost in the Las Vegas economy.
"What will happen is that it will have an economic impact for people who do business -- restaurants, a need for lawyers, accountants, and all types of services," he said.
With the nations high unemployment rate, coupled with the government stepping up border security, the report says many immigrants simply aren't willing to take the risk for the land of opportunity.
"I think we're doing much better at securing our borders. I think it's going to be harder and harder for you to cross the border in the future," said Merida.
Despite having the country's highest unemployment rate, Nevada's illegal immigrant workforce leads the nation.
"It's very attractive because we have a lot of service jobs. Jobs that don't require too much of an education in order to be successful in order to get a job," said Merida.
But with building at standstill, one immigrant who asked not to be identified says he's been looking for work for more than a year. Despite many immigrants leaving, he plans to stay.
"I used to work in construction," he said. "I have my kids over here -- three kids and my wife."
But with a 20-percent unemployment rate among immigrants in Nevada, he isn't sure for how long. Those numbers could also be an important factor to determine which states will gain or lose seats in the House of Representatives after the 2010 census.

They really expect us to believe anything that they say. The federal government is now granting amnesty by releasing thousands of illegal aliens back into society, to no longer face deportation. So for those leaving, there are more coming, and thousands more will be able to stay.
Who tracks them, they "live in the shadows"?
2 Chronicles 7:14Matthew 19:26
But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.

Just the skeptic in me but I suspect Harry Reid being in a tight race with Sharron Angle contacted ICE and told that corrupt pos ICE Director John Morton to deport as many in Nevada as he can to give the false impression that Reid is tough on illegal immigration. Never trust Reid. He is as slippery as a bucket of eels and corrupt to boot. More eyewash now that Obama has granted backdoor amnesty to illegal aliens

Illegal immigration slowing over years, study says

WASHINGTON - Illegal immigration into the United States has slowed considerably in the last several years, a study released Wednesday concludes.
The decline marks the first significant turnaround in two decades, researchers with the nonpartisan Pew Hispanic Center say. As a result, the U.S. illegal immigrant population may have fallen as much as 8 percent from 2007 to 2009.
"We've seen a reversal in what had been the long-term growth in the illegal immigrant population," researcher Jeffrey S. Passel said Wednesday.
Illegal immigration into the United States has slowed considerably in the past several years, a study released Wednesday concludes.
A new study says nearly a quarter of the nation's illegal immigrants live in California, despite a nearly 4 percent drop in the state's illegal population.
A Pew Hispanic Center report released Wednesday estimates California had 2.55 million illegal immigrants in 2009, a 3.8 decrease from the year before. The state accounts for 23 percent of illegal immigrants in the United States.
The study also says illegal immigrants now comprise 6.9 percent of California's population - the highest percentage in the country. California trails only Nevada with illegal labor comprising 9.3 percent of its work force.
The number of illegal immigrants living in the U.S. has dropped for the first time in two decades - decreasing by 8 percent since 2007, a new study finds. The reasons range from the sour economy to Mexican violence and increased U.S. enforcement that has made it harder to sneak across the border.
Much of the decline comes from a sharp drop-off in illegal immigrants from the Caribbean, Central America and South America attempting to cross the southern border of the U.S., according to the Pew Hispanic Center, which based its report on an analysis of 2009 census data.
The findings come amid bitter debate over Arizona's strict new immigration law, which was passed earlier this year but is on hold for now as it is challenged in federal court. The Obama administration contends the state law usurps federal authority and promotes racial profiling, while Arizona leaders say states are justified to step in if federal enforcement falls substantially short.

WASHINGTON -- Illegal immigration into the United States has slowed considerably in the last several years, a new study concludes.
The decline of nearly half the annual influx of illegal immigrants marks the first significant turnaround in two decades, researchers with the non-partisan Pew Hispanic Center say. As a result, the overall U.S. illegal immigrant population may have fallen as much as 8% between 2007 and 2009.
"We've seen a reversal in what had been the long-term growth in the illegal immigrant population," researcher Jeffrey S. Passel said Wednesday.
An estimated 11.million illegal immigrants still live in the United States, and many more enter each year. Between 2007 and 2009, an estimated 300,000 illegal immigrants snuck into the United States annually.
But this still marks an improvement over the period between 2005 and 2007, when an estimated 550,000 illegal immigrants entered annually. Possibly because of tighter enforcement measures and economic circumstances driving some immigrants back home, the total population is down from its estimated 2007 peak of 12 million.
"Particularly along the Southern border, enforcement has ramped up considerably," Passel noted. "It's harder and more dangerous for immigrants to cross into the country."
Illegal immigrants still remain concentrated in a relatively few states. An estimated 2.5 million illegal immigrants live in California, 1.6 million live in Texas and 675,000 live in Florida.
California's illegal immigrant population is down an estimated 3% from 2005, while Florida's fell a far more dramatic 27%. In Texas, the illegal immigrant population actually increased slightly.
The researchers caution that their findings based on sampling are subject to a margin of error, as well as the inherent uncertainties in tracking an illegal population. Consequently, the overall illegal immigrant population estimates are described as "not conclusive."
Still, parts of the 37-page study released Wednesday track some other studies, including a Department of Homeland Security assessment that the number of illegal immigrants fell from 11.8 million in 2007 to 10.8 million in 2009. The researchers used different Census Bureau data for their respective studies.
The Pew Hispanic Center study also arrives at a politically opportune time, as state and federal lawmakers debate immigration reform and border security measures. The Obama administration is challenging a new Arizona law that requires police to check identification papers of suspected illegal immigrants, while Congress considers new legislation.
"Our borders are just too vast for us to be able to solve the problem only with fences and border patrols," President Barack Obama said in July, adding that "stopping illegal immigration must go hand in hand with reforming our creaky system of legal immigration."
