Today, Tennessee Senator Lamar Alexander directly asked the head of the justice department for an immigration judge in Nashville.

A year ago, Metro began a program, known as 287(g,) to identify illegal immigrants in the city’s jails. In its first year, the number of illegal aliens found in Nashville has gone up from 150 to 3-thousand.

Speaking to US Attorney General Michael Mukasey at a Senate subcommittee hearing, Alexander said most people detained in Nashville are transported to Louisiana. He suggested the current situation costs the federal government too much money and time, but that it could be rectified by placing a judge here. Alexander did not ask for an immediate response. Instead, the Attorney General is expected to issue a written reply.
