NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A proposal that would require proof of citizenship to register as a Tennessee voter has failed in the House Elections Subcommittee.

The measure sponsored by Rep. Curry Todd, a Collierville Republican, failed 3-3 on Wednesday and is likely dead this session.

The proposal would require people seeking to register to vote to document their citizenship with driver's licenses, passports or birth certificates.

Current state law requires people to check a box on an application affirming under threat of perjury that they are U.S. citizens.

A companion bill to the failed House measure is scheduled for a Senate floor vote this week.

WHY WOULD ANYONE VOTE AGAINST A BILL REQUIRING PROOF OF CITIZENSHIP TO VOTE? This just doesnt make any damn sense. Everyone has to show a license to drive or an id to get into a bar or an adult move, so why not an id to vote? It isnt "profiling" to find out if people that vote are here legally or illegally.

What has happened to the spirit of the Tennessee volunteers, who battled the British? It is beginning to sound like they only thing they are volunteering for these days is becoming part of Mexico.
