Bill would penalize companies that hire illegal immigrants

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The state could suspend business licenses for companies found to have knowingly employed illegal immigrants under a bill headed to the governor for his consideration.

The license would only be restored once the company proves that all its employees are in the country legally. A second violation within five years would lead to a 1-year suspension, and a third violation would lead to a permanent suspension.

The measure was sponsored by Senator Bill Ketron of Murfreesboro. It passed the Senate 31 to 1 today and was unanimously approved in the House last week.
