Parents arrested in death of three month old


Metro police have charged the parents of a deceased baby with aggravated child abuse after an autopsy found the three month old to have suffered rib fractures, bruising behind the eyes and a head injury.

According to a Metro police report, Nelson Aguilar Gomez, 27, and Florinda Lopes, 19, brought their daughter, Azucena Lopez-Lajuj, to Baptist Hospital Saturday morning. They told staff at the hospital that they had checked on the baby at home and discovered she wasn't breathing.

The parents, who each are being held on $250,00 bond, told police that they have no knowledge of how their daughter received the injuries, the report said. The Nashville couple, originally from Guatemala, are also on a federal immigration hold because they are suspected of illegally entering the U.S.

Metro's Youth Servics detectives led the investigation and made the arrest.
