Well, raise the damn pay. Who wants to go to some "remote" area, live in the hot desert with rattlesnakes and scorpions while facing off with armed drug cartels that would just as soon behead you as look at you while spending your day listening to these gypsy illegal aliens sob stories all day for $32,844 a year? Bump it up to $40,000, drop the college and polygraph requirements, and see if that works out better for you.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents are responsible for maintaining the security of America's entry points. This is a rewarding job, in itself -- but border agents also receive excellent pay and benefits that make the career worthwhile. New Border Patrol agents are hired in one of three federal pay grades, and can start with an annual salary exceeding $49,000 per year.

    Starting Salary

Newly hired U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents are hired on at one of three government pay grade levels: GL-5, GL-7 or GL-9. The pay for a level GL-5 hire is $38,619 per year. For a GL-7 hire, the wage increases to $43,964. GL-9 hires earn the highest salary of newly recruited border agents, making $49,029 per year.

The criteria for deciding the pay grade of a new hire are her past experience and education.

    Salary Increases

After completing 55 days of basic training and passing the 6 1/2-month probationary examination, new hires are able to move up to a higher pay grade. GL-5 hires can move up to the GL-7 grade and GL-7 hires can be promoted to the GL-9 grade. After a year at the GL-9 pay grade, border agents are eligible for a promotion to the GL-11 pay grade which ranges from $59,987 per year to $77,981. After a year at the GL-11 pay grade, agents can be promoted to the GL-12 level where the salary ranges from $71,901 to $93,470.

    Additional Pay

Border agents work 40 hours per week, but are expected to work an additional nine to 10 hours per week of what the aganecy terms "administratively uncontrollable overtime. Agents are also given additional pay for working nights, Sundays and holidays. Agents may be eligible for additional locality pay, depending on where they are posted. For instance, the starting salary at the G-11 pay grade is $59,987 per year, but it rises to $60,681 in Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas area and $63,945 in the Los Angeles, Long Beach and Riverside area of California. Finally, agents receive a uniform allowance of $1,500 per year.

    Benefits

Border agents receive a federal government benefit package that includes health and life insurance, retirement benefits and a 401-k plan. Agents can retire as early as age 50 if they have 20 years of service. Agents are eligible for 13 days leave per year when they start. With three to 14 years of service, agents receive 20 days leave per year. After 15 years of service, agents are eligible for 26 days of leave. On top of these leave days, they can take 13 sick days per year.

Those locations and that pay isn't on the border where we need them. Your link that you posted JD2 shows the advertised pay rate for a Border Patrol Protection Agent is $32,844. If you then click on that position title you see that those are the jobs in Arizona and California on the border being advertised now.

Our issue isn't in Los Angeles or DC or New York or .. the many they advertised for Canada. Our issue is the southern border and those guys are getting screwed by this absurdly low pay rate, no wonder they're having problems hiring and keeping good people in those jobs.

Raise the pay, raise the base starting salary pay for "Border Protection Agents" for the Texas, Arizona, New Mexico and California border with Mexico to $40,000 a year, $20 an hour, plus at least 25% benefits, drop the college and polygraph requirements, and see what happens. You might need to raise it more, but that will surely make a huge difference in who applies for these jobs at these remote locations.

And, no, you can not sell these low pay jobs on the border as "rewarding jobs". There is nothing rewarding about arresting illegal aliens, listening to those sob stores in spanish all day, the same ole lie after lie and lie, children in tow. It's one of the hardest damn jobs in the world. Now pay what it's worth and get these good Americans willing to do it in that horrible hot environment on board to help US.

There is absolutely nothing "rewarding" about dealing all day with this low life crap, nothing rewarding at all.

According to the below link BP agents earn approximately $40,000 (2012 pay scale) to start and don't require a college education. Additionally, Judy, service to country can be very rewarding! That's coming from someone who served their country for over 20 year. Of course someone that hasn't served may not understand.

Well, this is what it pays today direct from the government website link JD2 published for jobs available today open from April 1, 2017 to April 30, 2017. Not sure where your "chron.com" link got their information in 2012, but today this is the advertised pay through the CBP website JD2 posted:

    Customs and Border Protection Officer
    Customs and Border Protection
    Department Of Homeland Security
    Multiple Locations

    Starting at $32,844 (GS 05-07)
    Permanent • Full Time

    Open 04/01/2017 to 04/30/2017
Any time there's this much confusion about what a job pays, the work force loses interest pretty fast and if the best selling point you've got for it is that it's "rewarding", you've got a pay problem.

JD2 is posting the articles about BP losing people faster than they can hire them. I'm offering the time and expertise to explain the reason for that, it's a pay problem, the pay isn't high enough to draw good applicants to work that southern border. In fact compared to the pay in other locations, it looks deliberately low to make sure you can't find good applicants.
