A 13-year-old boy and one man were killed this morning in a rollover accident on the Southwest Side when the driver of a stolen sport utility vehicle attempted to flee from Border Patrol agents and the Tohono O’odham Police Department.
Six others, including three juveniles, were injured and were taken to hospitals for treatment.
The incident occurred around 4 a.m. when Border Patrol agents spotted a 2004 Dodge Durango northbound on South Mission Road, near West Valencia Road, that had been reported stolen in Phoenix, said Jesus Rodriguez, a spokesman for the agency’s Tucson Sector. The agents activated their emergency lights and siren to initiate the traffic stop, but the Durango did not pull over, he said.
The Durango began speeding, exceeding the 45 mph speed limit, at which time the agents shut down their emergency lights and siren and followed at or below the speed limit, Rodriguez said.
The Tohono O’odham Police Department was called out to assist the agents, but the SUV continued until it hit a dip in the road, became airborne and rolled, he said.
One man was dead at the scene, Rodriguez said. A 13-year-old boy was taken to a hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later. The other occupants of the vehicle included two boys, one girl, two men and one woman.
At this point, the Border Patrol does not know who the driver of the vehicle was or why they fled. The nationality of the victims is not known.
