Two sides begin fight over illegal immigration
The two sides in the fight over illegal immigration in Alabama discussed a proposÂ*al modeled after the controÂ*versial law in Arizona durÂ*ing a public hearing Wednesday.
In the second day of the legislative session, a comÂ*mittee in the Alabama House of Representatives heard from both sides concerning a bill intended to push out illeÂ*gal immigrants that are here and to deter others from coming to the state.
The bill, which the sponÂ*sor believes will be amended, is expected to require all emÂ*ployers to use the federal E-Verify system to check the immigration status of workÂ*ers, require jails to hold peoÂ*ple until they can verify their status, criminalize knowingly transporting an illegal immigrant, and allow law enforcement officers to ask for proof of status during other stops.
Illegal immigrants, under the bill, could be charged with trespassing and jailed for even being found in AlaÂ*bama.
"We will be asking for a lot of forms of ID moving forÂ*ward," said House Majority Leader Micky Hammon, R-Decatur, the sponsor of the bill.
Opponents are concerned the legislation would lead to racial profiling, mistrust by the Hispanic community, and additional costs for busi-nesses, cities and counties.
Gwendolyn Ferreti, a regÂ*istered voter in Tuscaloosa, said the proposal "is a slap in the face of anyone that looks remotely like me."
"This bill is racist and will negatively affect the lives of Alabamians who look like me," Ferreti said.
Proponents argued that those who are here illegally are a drain on public services during this economic crisis and that they are driving down wages for Alabamians looking for work.
"We have illegal aliens. What is it about illegal that is hard for some people to unÂ*derstand," said Dale PeterÂ*son, former Republican canÂ*didate for agriculture commissioner.
The House Public Safety and Homeland Security ComÂ*mittee did not vote on the bill. Hammon, the chairman of the panel, said they could vote on the bill next week.
Most observers expect the Legislature, now under ReÂ*publican control for the first time in more than 130 years, to pass legislation intended to curb illegal immigration in Alabama.
