TX: Debate over day labor site continues
Debate over day labor site continues

Residents representing several Texas Tea Party chapters and other organizations in Tomball and neighboring communities recently appealed to Tomball City Council to close down a city-funded day labor site off of East Main Street in downtown Tomball.
The site provides shelter and access to employment for illegal immigrants, which is against the law, they said. The city should not be involved in funding anything that promotes illegal activity.
There was no item on the regular Aug. 16 City Council meeting agenda for discussion, but in June several councilmembers stated they had issues with the city footing the bill for a day labor site after they were asked to consider renewing a lease agreement with Frank DeNina and Russell DeDenina, who are owners of the 3.5-acre property on South Sycamore Street and east of the Burlington Northern Railroad tracks.
The city entered into the lease agreement in 2000, and has paid about $1,500 in property taxes each year per the terms of the contract. The day labor site opened the same year with picnic tables, a bicycle rack, a water fountain, portable restrooms and a shelter. The city of Tomball pays a monthly fee for a port-a-can.
The Council voted unanimously in June to table to lease renewal agenda item, and to start discussions with the Greater Tomball Area Chamber of Commerce and other local businesses about taking over that lease agreement.
Residents speak out
Residents who spoke before Council this week said they believed the site should be permanently closed.
“I like Mexico, I like Mexicans, and l like Mexican food, but for a municipality to build a day labor site to further illegal activity is unconscionable,â€

Gregory White, a Spring resident, said the city’s first duty was to ensure the safety of its citizens.

Tomball has day labor site that's funded through city taxes. Complete
with picnic tables, water fountain, BBQ grills and porta potties. The story
I heard was that the illegals used to hang out in front of the police station
looking for work so they set up a site nearby to keep them out of sight
because store owners downtown were complaining.
Not only is it violating federal law it's creating a big magnet for illegals
and the illegal activity that goes along with it. So far, patriots have
recorded a whole slew of illegal activity. We've also discovered that the
illegals are being bussed in from nearby towns. They park their vans a
couple of blocks away and walk over to the site.
We've been fighting this for a couple of months now. Some have been
fighting it for years. We've had rallys, passed out fliers, attended town
hall meetings and we have a day labor watch scheduled very soon.
It's starting to get a lot of local media attention and we've got the city
council and mayor's attention although I don't think they want to admit
it. I feel like we're making a difference.

Tomball’s day labor site is attracting attention outside city limits, as nine Houston-area residents spoke out against the site at the Aug. 16 Tomball city council meeting.
Larry Youngblood, a Houston resident, said he volunteers at the Mexico border to help the border patrol.
He said he and a group of others met with the Houston City Council in 2006 to plead with the city to shut down a day labor site he said the city was funding then, that is no longer funded.
Jim Cabaniss, of The Woodlands and speaking as a member of the American Veterans in Domestic Defense, said veterans have been challenged to proactively turn the country around.
“As veterans, we are still under oath to protect the nation and our borders,â€If the race card is the only card in your hand, you're not playing with a full deck.

If he lived in Tomball’s city limits, Decker Prairie resident Phil Johnson said he’d be pounding city councilmen’s heads every day because he wants the city-funded day labor site closed.
“We want it shut down. Dismantled. Not handed over to some church or the chamber,â€If the race card is the only card in your hand, you're not playing with a full deck.
