Gov. Rick Perry offers few specifics on 'sanctuary cities' for illegal immigrants

Gov. Rick Perry did not shed much light Wednesday on his call to abolish "sanctuary cities" for illegal immigrants in the state.

The governor made the issue one of two critical emergency items for this Legislative session but he did not say what criteria would be used to identify sanctuary cities, whether he wanted local law enforcement to question immigration status of all drivers they pull over or what the state would do to eliminate sanctuary cities.

"We'll write the legislation over the next 140 days and not this morning," Perry said during a press conference with reporters.

Perry, in his reelection campaign against Houston's former mayor Democrat Bill White, said the state's largest city was a haven for undocumented immigrants. Houston political leaders have disputed the claim.

On Wednesday he declined to name what he considered to be the state's "sanctuary cities."

"We're going to have a very lengthy and appropriate conversation about the concept of cities allowing for individuals to find haven from state and federal laws in this state," he said. "There are cities in this state that have made decisions that they are going be havens for those who are either in conflict with federal immigration laws or state laws and we're going to prohibit and put an end to that."

He added, "I consider a number of cities in this state to be totally out of compliance with what the citizens of this state want to see, from the standpoint of making sure that our citizens are kept completely safe."
