AUSTIN - According to the Austin Police Department, several APD units responded to the scene after a stop initiated by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer turned physical around 5 a.m. Friday.

It happened at 13642 U.S. 183 just north of Anderson Mill Road.

KVUE News spoke with Teresa Velazquez, the mother-in-law of the man detained. Velazquez claims the man has a work visa for the United States. She said the ICE officer claimed to have a warrant and tried to detain him, so he ran. At some point, the man and the officer ended up on the ground wrestling.

According to Velazquez, the officer reported the man punched him during the scuffle.

There are conflicting reports about who was taken to a medical facility for evaluation. Austin-Travis County EMS could not confirm the agency involved. They originally said that medics took an immigration officer with minor injuries to a medical facility to be checked out. They then said they could only confirm that a man was taken to a medical facility.

ICE told KVUE Friday morning that none of their officers were hurt.

Austin police provided backup for what they called "crowd control" after the person's family members got upset.

Velazquez told KVUE officers also arrested her daughter and her daughter-in-law at the scene for unpaid tickets.

Velazquez also told KVUE her other son-in-law, who is undocumented but has begun immigration paperwork, has been detained by ICE.

KVUE has reached out to ICE, who said they are working on a statement about the incident.

This developing story will update as more information becomes available.

Immigration officer injured in North Austin arrest; Casar condemns ICE

    11:17 a.m. Friday, Feb. 10, 2017 News

An immigration officer was treated at an emergency clinic for what officials say are minor injuries during an arrest in North Austin on Friday morning, according to officials from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

“One ICE officer was injured in Austin, Texas, while he was arresting a criminal alien early in the morning of Feb. 10,” the agency said in a statement a few hours after the incident. “The officer was treated and released from a local hospital. No further information regarding this incident is releasable.”

Austin police Lt. Cara Boyd said the immigration officer pulled a vehicle over around 6 a.m. in the 13600 block of the U.S. 183 southbound service road between Anderson Mill Road and Lake Creek Parkway.

Boyd said the officer was trying to take a person into custody, but family members tried to intervene.

An Austin police supervisor said family members “got out of hand.”

Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services medics said they were called out to take a man to a freestanding emergency room for treatment.

Austin Council Member Greg Casar, who said his district has been affected by recent immigration arrests, said Friday that the ICE actions are “retaliation” against the city’s stance on immigrants.

“The community needs to know that we have confirmed a large amount of Immigration and Customs Enforcement actions in Austin in the last 24 hours, particularly in the North Lamar and Rundberg area,” Casar said in a statement. “I believe ICE is out in public arresting people in order to retaliate against our community for standing up for our values against people like (Texas Gov. Greg) Abbott and (President Donald) Trump.”

Casar also said the arrests were “beyond reprehensible” and “they instill fear in the community, and they make everyday people fear for their lives.”

“Undoubtedly, ICE officials will attempt to justify themselves by holding up the actions of a few people to imply that the all undocumented immigrants are criminals. This is disturbing and morally wrong,” he said.

The incident comes hours after activists staged a late-night protest to support a man they say was detained under similar circumstances on Thursday morning.

A statement from ICE said the agency conducts operations across the nation on a daily basis, but does not conduct random “sweeps.” All ICE operations are based upon investigative leads, the agency said.

ICE AGENT HOSPITALIZED AFTER ASSAULT BY ‘CRIMINAL ALIEN’

Federal immigration officer says illegal punched him

    Adan Salazar | Infowars.com - FEBRUARY 10, 2017 626 Comments

An Immigrations and Customs Enforcement agent was hospitalized Friday morning following an attempt to apprehend a criminal illegal alien in Austin, Texas, the federal agency said in a statement.

The incident happened around 6:30AM when the federal agent pulled over a man for a routine traffic stop.

Austin police also arrested two women who accompanied the man and who also had warrants out for their arrests.

“A spokesperson for ICE released a statement stating the ICE officer was injured while he was arresting a ‘criminal alien,’” reported NBC affiliate KXAN. “The officer was treated and released from the hospital.”

    KVUE News has additional details:

KVUE News spoke with Teresa Velazquez, the mother-in-law of the man detained. Velazquez claims the man has a work visa for the United States. She said the ICE officer claimed to have a warrant and tried to detain him, so he ran. At some point, the man and the officer ended up on the ground wrestling.

According to Velazquez, the officer reported the man punched him during the scuffle.

There were originally conflicting reports about who was taken to a medical facility for evaluation. ICE now confirms one of their officers was checked out at a free-standing ER and released
    .

Following the arrest, Austin City Council Member Greg Casar spoke out against “large amounts” of ICE sweeps he says have been taking place in North Austin in the past day.

“ICE actions like these are beyond reprehensible. They instill fear in the community, and they make everyday people fear for their lives,” Casar said.

Casar is the same city council member who last week put out an infographic telling illegal immigrants not to comply with federal immigration officials and urging them to “fight back.”

ICE claims they are not conducting sweeps of illegal aliens.

The arrest arrives as the annual “Texas warrant roundup” kicks off, with several state and local law enforcement agencies targeting locals who are wanted for arrest.
