    News
    Wednesday, August 27, 2008 at 10:15 a.m.

Nine suspected illegal immigrants are in custody after allegedly fleeing from Border Patrol agents in Lubbock, TX.

The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reported that a Border Patrol agent stopped their van in the 7000 block of Avenue P at about 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Officials told the newspaper that the van initially stopped, but then took off leading agents on a car chase and then footchase.

The Avalanche-Journal reported that two of the suspects were from Nicaragua, two were from Guatemala, one was from Honduras, one was from El Salvador and three were from Mexico.

Authorities told the newspaper that all nine were all living illegally in Jacksonville, Fla., and had driven to Lubbock to work in the construction business.

Most of the group likely will be taken to an immigration detention center to await deportation to their home countries.

At least a dozen officers canvassed the area around Lowrey Field late Tuesday afternoon and rounded up nine suspected illegal immigrants who fled when their vehicle was stopped by Border Patrol agents.

The agents spent the evening questioning the group.

"They weren't prisoners until they escaped," said Bill Brooks, Border Patrol public affairs officer for the region.

A Border Patrol agent stopped the van in the 7000 block of Avenue P at about 3 p.m. The van initially stopped, but then took off. It stopped again shortly after, and the nine occupants bolted. There were some reports of suspects fleeing across South Loop 289.

Officers with the Lubbock Police Department, the Lubbock County Sheriff's Office, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and volunteers aided Border Patrol agents in locating the suspects.

Two of the suspects were from Nicaragua, two were from Guatemala, one was from Honduras, one was from El Salvador and three were from Mexico, Brooks said.

They were all living illegally in Jacksonville, Fla., and had driven to Lubbock to work in the construction business, he said.

Brooks said most of the group likely will be taken to a camp to await deportation to their country. One of the suspects, the driver, had prior deportations on his record and may serve jail time in the U.S. before being sent back to his country.

Brooks said it's fairly common for illegal immigrants to be deported from Lubbock and Amarillo - buses run daily, with anywhere from three illegal immigrants to 30.

Since Oct. 1, about 5,000 illegal immigrants have been deported from the Marfa Sector, which includes a strip of 135,000 square miles encompassing more than 118 counties in Texas and Oklahoma. The sector is responsible for the largest geographical area of any sector along the Southwest border.
