Illegal Immigrants Bailout of Pick-Up Truck

(November 22, 2007)

Bishop police and Border Patrol agents are still searching the thick brush west of Bishop for a group of 15 illegal immigrants.

Thursday afternoon a Nueces County Deputy Constable was driving down County Road 85 in Bishop when he spotted a pickup weaving down the road. After following it for a while, the immigrants jumped out and headed into the thick brush nearby. The Border Patrol was called in to help with the search but so far no luck.

"If it gets down below 40 degrees there is a risk of people getting sick or dying from exposure, usually they'll come up to the car whenever they get cold or if it starts raining they'll come out pretty easy so where we can take them into custody and turn them over to border patrol," said Precinct 3 Constable Jack Caughman.

We're told that the back roads of Bishop are heavily travelled by immigrant smugglers. And about 100 people have been caught in a one week time frame.
