Some illegal immigrants, have found ways to own businesses legally in the U.S

Donna - A tiny snack stand in a Colonia, doesn't look out of the ordinary, it's licensed by the Texas State Comptroller's office, and Hidalgo County.

The only thing out of the ordinary is it's owner, Rosa Gonzalez. She's in the United States illegally.

Gonzalez, opened her stand, Raspas Hopi, to make ends meet and help provide for her two children. Her husband is a migrant farm worker, and has gone north to work.

Gonzalez tells NEWSCHANNEL 5 she earns about forty dollars a day, which doesn't seem like much, but it's enough to survive on.

We decided to find out exactly how an illegal immigrant could legally obtain business licenses.

The Hidalgo County Health Department says, they do not ask for proof of citizenship, they only require the business to pass inspection.

It's the same story for a Sales Tax and Use Permit from the State Comptrollers office.

Provided the owner meets the business requirements, they do not have to prove citizenship.

The State Comptroller's office Tells NEWSCHANNEL 5, there are thousands of businesses, legally owned and operated by illegal immigrants.
