When Colin Ellison signs new contracts with clients, he wants them to know that his stern look and firm handshake mean he has done everything possible to guarantee he has no unauthorized immigrants working for him.

It’s got nothing to do with politics, noted Ellison, analyst with Smith Protective Services in San Antonio — it’s about conducting good business, following the law and boosting national security.

That’s why, he said, his security company signed up for a new best-practices government program that all but promises approved employers they never will be subject to an unexpected immigration raid.

“As an employer, you have to know who you’re hiring,â€
