In response to mounting concerns regarding border violence, Cameron County Sheriff Omar Lucio hosted a meeting Wednesday with representatives from various law enforcement agencies.

More than 20 federal, state and local agencies participated in the closed door meeting aimed at formulating a unified contingency plan in the event that violence across the border escalated to a point that it spilled onto American soil, said Lucio.

"We have seen violence increasing across the border in Ciudad Juarez, Nuevo Laredo, and now we are seeing a trickle of it in Reynosa and Matamoros," Lucio said. "It is not something we want to implement, but we are taking a proactive approach rather than having to react to it."

The meeting at the Cameron County Sheriff's Department in Olmito was the first of three or four meetings where the agencies will discuss suggestions, questions and concerns about the border problem. Then, a unified response plan will be drafted, Lucio said.

"We all had our own contingency plans, but what better way to protect the American public than for us to work in unison to maximize our resources and manpower," the sheriff said.

Many if not most law enforcement agencies have special weapons and tactics teams, commonly referred to as SWAT. Part of the plan is for the various SWAT teams to have joint training sessions to become accustomed to working together, Lucio said.

"They are great teams; by working together they become that much better at protecting the public," he said.

I know someone that frequently stays at a hotel near the border in Laredo. Every night, he hears gunfire and can see comotion on the streets Nuevo Laredo on the Mexican side of the border.

This is not new information. Not at all. It's about time they started doing something about it.
