FALFURRIAS — U. S. Border Patrol agents discovered 12 undocumented immigrants Tuesday in a tractor-trailer and on Wednesday, rescued another who was lost on a ranch.
Twelve people were rescued after the driver tried to pass an 18-wheeler through a border patrol checkpoint on U.S. Highway 281 near Falfurrias, according to a news release.
A police dog alerted at the trailer and inside, agents found the undocumented immigrants who otherwise had no means of escape, officials said.
A Mexican national also was rescued early Wednesday on a ranch located near Armstrong.
He became disoriented and distressed and activated a rescue beacon on the ranch, one of eight around the Rio Grande Valley. Border Patrol agents from Kingsville quickly located the man and gave him medical attention.
All undocumented immigrants will be medically cleared and returned to their country of origin.
With temperatures on the rise, Border Patrol officials are on the lookout for those entering the country illegally who may succumb to the harsh South Texas terrain and temperatures.
Since October, Rio Grande Valley border patrol agents have rescued more than 150 people and have discovered the remains of 46.
