U.S. bolstering effort to fight Mexican drug smuggling, violence


More federal agents and surveillance equipment are being added to parts of the border with Mexico in a bid to stop assault weapons and drug profits from being smuggled into Mexico, not just preventing drug smuggling into the United States. The announcement comes a day before Secretary of State Hillary Clinton leaves on a trip to Mexico.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano announced the plan to spend $700 million to curb drug smuggling and the escalating border violence, calling it “a demand issue and a supply issue,â€
