Authorities continue to investigate the shooting of a Mexican national who died after a scuffle with a border patrol agent. With battles brewing across the border, agents protecting our side say they're taking extra precautions. Our Annette Garcia has more on our top story tonight.
"Border patrol agents are being put on high alert. As Mexico deals with feuding drug cartels, and agents on the U.S. side of the border defend themselves against drug traffickers, representatives of the national border patrol council are asking members to be extra careful. 'It's a very much talked about the incident that happened just a few days ago. That's an example of what agents encounter everyday,' says Sergio Moreno, president of the local N.B.P.C. Wednesday night, a Laredo Border Patrol agent discharged his weapon, shooting and killing a Mexican national after a struggle near the river. Council president Sergio Moreno says the incidents are rare, but can happen. He says now is the time agents are reminded to practice everything they've been taught. 'Whatever situation they encounter, we hope they practice what brings them back home that day,' adds Moreno, 'be aware of their surroundings...take note of what just happened. It could happen to each and every one of them.' (Annette 'Border patrol agents say the very aggressive nature of those pushing narcotics into the U.S. is always something to worry about, but still, they have a job t do.' 'That comes with it. It's understood. It's a career...it's a vocation...it's a calling,' says Moreno. 'I want them to be home. I want them to share another day with loved ones that does press in my mind a lot,' he says. Annette Garcia, Pro 8 News."
The council is made up of about 1200 local agents, and 14,000 nationwide.
