Illegal aliens driving popularity of Spanish newscasts

Illegal aliens driving popularity of Spanish newscasts

    Chad Groening - OneNewsNow - 8/16/2008 4:20:00 AM

An English-language advocate says it's because of illegal immigration that Spanish-language television newscasts are growing in popularity in the United States.

According to wcbs.com, within the last few months, Spanish-language station WXTV's 6 p.m. newscast has eclipsed its English-speaking competitors on ABC, CBS, and NBC stations in popularity among viewers younger than age 49. And according to Nielson Media Research, its sister station KMEX in Los Angeles had more viewers in June for its newscast than any of its English competitors, regardless of age.

Jim Boulet, executive director of English First, says it is interesting that according to Nielson, in 1995, 62 percent of Hispanic viewers in New York watched English language television over 38 percent who viewed Spanish-language TV. But last year Hispanics there favored Spanish stations 71 to 29 percent. This change, according to Boulet, is easy to explain: illegal immigrants from Mexico and Central America have not assimilated like Puerto Ricans and Cubans.

"The legal ones tend to get their news in English, where the illegal immigrants want their news in Spanish. They want to see what is going on in their home country," Boulet contends. "Plus, the illegal immigrants prefer the tone of Univision and Spanish-language news because it's all 'rah rah illegal immigrant, rah rah amnesty, aren't you wonderful?' Whereas the English language news tends to talk about immigration enforcement and that depresses them."

I hear little to NO immigration enforcement on our news. SOB stories about the "poor immigrant" is what I hear.

I'm a citizen of this country and if I want news about my "old home town"....I have to spend extra to have their paper sent to me. We have other ethnic channels but they have to pay extra to get them....why not the Spanish channel? I can't have my own legal channels without paying for the Spanish channels. I can't even have them translated to English if I'd like to watch one of their movies.....but they can to mine. Let them pay instead of bumping mine. They are the minority special interest group.....not me. You can take the 15 or so odd Spanish channels off my deal and substitute it with channels of my choice. If you get the Univision channel they aren't contributing to mine. They are paying soley for every channel in Spanish. Where's their contribution for the wonders of this global society?

This is a good point. I know of MANY people who are disgusted that they have to pay for Spanish channels they will never watch. It doesn't take much time to see most of thier soap operas look like soft porn anyway and is not something I'd want the kids seeing.

I couldn't get squat with regular cable without the next step up....and now they are putting them up to next level while the Spanish channels take over mine. Level 2 cable with internet.....120+ dollars a month. Of which a good half is Spanish channels. Free TV....mostly Spanish. I'm not the immigrant.....I'm not the one demanding special services.....why should my price sky rocket when theirs aren't?

They can have everything translated from English to Spanish.....but I don't have that option.

Get DirecTV. Cheaper and better. Check them out. We gave up cable a long time ago.

If I find that their choices hinder my English channels, I will let them know and I think that a lot of people should give up their services if this happens. If enough of us do that, they'll rethink it.
