Unanimous Baltimore City Council Support for Immigration Reform

As of approximately 7 p.m. last night, Latinos in the Baltimore area have much to celebrate. At that time, in a bold, unprecedented action, the Baltimore City Council gave unanimous approval to the motion to support President Obama’s proposed Comprehensive Immigration Reform. The motion, originated by Councilwoman Spector, is the first step in the road to the ultimate goal: obtaining congressional approval of this legislation.

For months, members of the Governor’s Commission of Hispanic Affairs, the Latino Providers Network, Casa de Maryland, Centro de la Comunidad, Education-Based Latino Outreach, the Hispanic Business Association, the Center for Community Change and other community organizations have been lobbying with elected officials in order to gain the support of the local City Council.

Jessica Contreras, Hispanic Liaison to Mayor Sheila Dixon’s Office, believes this is a major step that will give the Latino population a renewed confidence in the city’s government. “Last year there were some [immigration] raids in the area that affected many local families. Many people in the community were afraid to even go outside,â€

Last August wasn't there an exit program for illegal immigrants? Why are these illegal aliens still in our country?

    Obama.

If our president would just go on national TV and say, illegal immigration is a crime and America is going to start cracking down on illegal aliens at the workplace, at their homes, with their documents, with utility services, with local law enforcement, at the welfare office... and that it will no longer be tollerated in the United States. Illegal aliens would get the hell out of here and fast. They would leave, if they were afraid of getting caught. They loose everything if they get caught and take what they can if they leave on their own.

I believe this is a violation of this statute if it gets to a point where any US official starts exerting influence on their behalf:

18 U.S.C. § 219 is not a registration statute, but is a conflict of interest statute which makes it a criminal offense for a "public official" of the United States in the executive, legislative, or judicial branches to be or to act as an agent of a foreign principal required to register under FARA. This does not apply to special government employees who register under FARA and obtain certification from the head of the employing agency that such employment is required in the national interest.

The turning point would be that this "immigrant community" has no legal status in the US--therefore are technically construed as "foreign principals" Other immigrant communities that faced unjust adversity were admitted legally.

“With the exception of Native Americans, everyone in this country is an immigrant. The United States has given every immigrant group an opportunity and the new groups that have arrived need an opportunity too.â€
