HAMILTON — Hours before Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones announced deployment of a special unit investigating the hiring of “illegal aliens,” deputies arrested an alleged undocumented Salvadoran after on various traffic violations.

According to the sheriff’s office, Jose Roberto Bonilla-Ruiz, 22, was arrested about 9:30 a.m. Thursday after he allegedly ran a red light and nearly caused an accident with a sheriff’s cruiser at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Hanover Street.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Monte Mayer said a deputy, transporting a prisoner to the county jail, was driving east through the intersection when Ruiz, northbound on MLK, allegedly ran a red light while turning right onto Hanover and into the path of the cruiser.

According to Mayer, the deputy stopped Ruiz and found he had no driver’s license or Social Security number. Mayer said Ruiz was born in El Salvador and is currently living on Petty Drive in Hamilton.

In addition, he had two children in his car, one of which was a 2-year-old who was not restrained in a safety seat.

Ruiz was charged with a red light violation, driving without a license and a child safety seat violation.

The children were released to the custody of a family friend who had arrived at the scene of the incident.
