    Unemployed Bricklayers: Workers Are 'Illegal'
    Protesters Gather At Construction Site

    POSTED: 5:30 pm EST February 12, 2009
    UPDATED: 8:47 pm EST February 12, 2009

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Some people call it racial profiling without a reason, others say it's a suspicious circumstance.

For the second day in a row, on Thursday protesters gathered at an Anderson construction site, demonstrating against what they claim are illegal workers.

The general contractor said that its masonry subcontractor has made assurances that all its workers are in the U.S. legally.

The project is a new Anderson city fire station near Simpson Road and Highway 81.

Protesters, out-of-work bricklayers, were across the street from the site on Wednesday and Thursday.

They are calling on officials to take a closer look at immigration status of the workers who are doing brick and block work on the job, since most appear to be Hispanic.

"This is not about color or nothing like that. It's about jobs," one protester told WYFF News 4.

When the protesters gathered on Wednesday, many of the masonry workers left the job site.

"If they had nothing to hide, they should have stuck around," protester Chad Summerall said. "You can see they have plenty of brick to lay."

The state's illegal immigration reform act requires contractors and subcontractors working on government contracts to use a federal program called e-Verify to check on the immigration status of new hires.

"I can assure you that if the city is doing anything in any way that is contributing to illegal activities, it would be addressed immediately and corrective action taken," Anderson Fire Chief Jack Abraham said.

But the state law does not specify a way to ensure that the verification was done.

A spokesman from Gov. Mark Sanford's office said that there is no funding designated for enforcement of the law.

Anderson city leaders say because of that, they have to rely on the word of those supervising the worksite.

"They just gave us a written verification in the form of e-mail that it has been verified," Abraham said.

Lazer Construction, the general contractor, told WYFF News 4 that its subcontractor handling the brick work, J&H Masonry, has made assurances that all those on the job are here legally.

J&H Masonry has not responded to phone calls.

Hmmm .... then why don't you use your city inspectors that harass property owners about their grass getting too tall and re-assign them to investigate your construction sites ... or how about all that staff in the planning and zoning offices ... re-assign them to investigate your construction sites ... or how about all those police officers chasing "marijuana growing in the home", why don't you reassign them to inspect your construction sites ... or how about calling up unemployed volunteers to inspect your construction sites or retirees who care about their country and the next generation ... they'd work for pennies on the dollar or might even do it for free?

I'm really surprised at you Mark Sanford for bellyaching about "no funding designated for enforcement of the law." That is no excuse. You've got more money supporting more public employees than you can spend wisely, so reallocate your staff to priorities like enforcing US immigration law and protecting our labor market from foreign aggression or deputize Americans to volunteer to solve this crisis for us.

Where are my common sense can-do Republicans? Are they all hiding behind rocks or still too smart to run for public office?

And by the way, Mark, when you have an all Hispanic work crew in South Carolina, you've got EEO violations, Dude.

See, your Hispanic population is 3.5% of your state population in South Carolina. Your black population is 29% almost 9 x that number.

And lookey here, Marko Dude, look at your unemployment rate ... as of December of 2008, 3rd HIGHEST in the nation:

    http://money.cnn.com/pf/features/lists/ ... mployment/

Get my drift here, Helpless Dude?

    http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/45000.html

That means you need to re-assign your Civil Rights, Affirmative Action and State Department of Labor Personnel to inspect your construction sites for more reasons than US immigration law and stop bellyaching about "no funding to enforce the law".

Almost one-third of your state is black, you have an 8.4% unemployment rate, so when you see a construction crew that is 100% Hispanic, you need to round them up, haul them down to the court house, ask to see papers, ask to see documents, ask to see their hiring practices and then throw the book at them for violating US Immigration Law, US Labor Law and US Civil Rights Law in your state.

It's a big job, but I know South Carolina thinks big and they can handle it. So Mark, either lead or get out of their way.

No offense, but I have tried many times to search for certain things, and it comes up with nothing. I think the search engine needs to be modified.

That same crap is happening here in Greensboro area all the time anymore. Drive by and all you see is Hispanics working the job sites. And in this case if they were legal then why did they run. The people should go there every day and see if these workers show up.

Hmmm .... then why don't you use your city inspectors that harass property owners about their grass

    Thanks uniteasone!

I mean really! They have all these government workers that do nothing but harass and hound US citizens ... reassign them to harass and hound construction sites and ensure these workers are a) legal and b) have been hired according to all US and State immigration, labor and civil rights laws.

Illegal aliens and foreign work crews aren't exempt from Affirmative Action and Equal Employment Opportunity and if unemployed bricklayers are protesting the site then, that employer didn't advertise properly, didn't try to hire American Workers, and instead hired all Caucasian Hispanic and that's an EEO violation, right there, plain and simple. Lock 'em up and throw the book at 'em for EEO violations along with immigration violations.

    No offense taken jshhmr.
Yes, our search engine can be a bit unreliable unfortunately.
FYI, never use the 'search' feature under our Main Menu to the left, it is very unreliable.
I always use the one above under our banner.
Across from 'Search for keywords' place two unique words from within the article, such as a person's name, or pick places, etc.
And check the box 'Search for all terms.'
Then under 'Search previous' change in the drop down menu to '7 days.'
    Click 'search.'
Sometimes I'll check again with two different words to try to make sure.
    Hope this helps.
