Democrats and Latino activists at an immigration summit Thursday urged Utahns to spurn a proposed state approach to enforcement and instead pressure Congress to enact nationwide reform.

Three Democratic congressional challengers were on the 12-member panel at the Centro Civico Mexicano event, and all called for an end to political posturing with what they consider unfair and unconstitutional state enforcement proposals. They mocked Utah’s current congressional delegation for declining an invitation to the event from the Utah Coalition of Progressives, and for failing to enact immigration reform.

Bowen called for changes in trade policy because, he said, the North American Free Trade Agreement is partly to blame for the influx of Mexicans into America. The agreement enabled U.S. companies to ship factory jobs south, he said, but also flooded Mexico with cheaper U.S. farm goods that displaced Mexican farm workers.
